John William Harris was the son of Lloyd Oliver Harris (of Suwanee, Gwinnett County, Georgia) and Maude Wofford (of Chattooga County). He was born in Chattooga County, but by the 1920 census he was living in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. His father was a telegraph operator for the Railroad, and moved to Vicksburg, MS, briefly during the depression, before returning to Atlanta. On a trip to visit a relative in Cedartown, Polk County, Georgia, he met his future wife, Tommie Park Thurman. She was the daughter of Thomas Park Thurman and Sara Moselle George. J.W. resided in Chattanooga, TN; and Charleston, SC before settling in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama, where he worked for the government at Redstone Arsenal. J.W. and Parkie had 3 children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who now live throughout the southeastern United States.
