"Death of an Old Soldier. Died at Steelton PA, on Thursday evening, October 5, John Rumple, formally of this place. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served over two years as Sergeant of Co. D, Fourth New York Provisional Calvary. He was a pensioner and was twice married, His second wife was Miss Clepper of this place, who survives. The remains were brought here last Saturday morning on the 7:50 train and interred in the Marietta cemetery. A delegation from Post 351, G.A.R., of which he was a comrade, accompanied the remains, and were met at station by a committee of Post 226, G.A. R. He was in his 73rd year and was buried with the honors of war."

The son of Ann Rumple, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his mother in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Darnestown, Montgomery County, Maryland, October 15, 1861, and mustered into federal service October 17 as a private with Co. K, 3rd New York Cavalry. He was promoted to corporal, date unknown, to sergeant May 1, 1863, and to commissary sergeant, date unknown, then re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 16, 1863. Appointed 1st sergeant to date December 17, 1863, he was reduced to ranks, date unknown, and transferred to Co. B on July 4, 1865. On July 21, 1865, he transferred to Co. B, 1st New York Mounted Rifles, a regiment the following September was renamed the 4th New York Provisional Cavalry. He honorably discharged with his company November 29, 1865, at City Point, Virginia.

After the war, he was a steel worker living in Steelton, Dauphin County, where he was a member of Lascomb Post No. 381, G.A.R., but died in Harrisburg at the home of his sister-in-law Mrs. John Shaeffer after a protracted illness.
