Educated at Methodist College, Colombo, a premier girls school in Sri Lanka, Monica earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the prestigious Women's Christian College, after which she attended Columbia University on a full scholarship from the World Health Organization. After earning an M.S. degree in nutrition from Columbia, Monica was appointed chief nutritionist at General Hospital, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
She returned to the U.S. for further studies at the University of Hawaii, where she met and married her husband. Their daughter was born in Honolulu.
Monica was Chief Dietician at Phoenix General Hospital for many years and later a clinical nutritionist with Maricopa County Health Department. She retired in 1993.
She leaves behind only one surviving sibling--a sister, her husband, her daughter, and three grandnephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church (5510 N. Central Ave., Phoenix) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, 2008. Viewing begins at 1:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to First United Methodist Church, designated for the Justice Center, or to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). The burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Lawn Cemetery (2300 W. Van Buren, Phoenix) immediately following the service. -
