Valetta Marie Achatz, 82, of Ellensburg, died Thursday, May 15, following a short illness. She was born March 29, 1915 in Talmage, Neb., a daughter of John H. and Anna (Harms) Hespen.

Val graduated from Syracuse High School in Syracuse, Neb. and taught grade school before joining the WAVES during World War II. She moved to Seattle where she lived and worked before moving to Ellensburg with her husband Harvey W. Achatz, whom she married on Dec. 23, 1948. Val was active in her church and was a volunteer in various organizations.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Hespen; her husband, Harvey Achatz, two brothers, Johnny and Bob Hespen, and three sisters, Eileen Ernst, Evelyn Wurtele and Jackie Rossow, who lived with Val before moving to Sitka, Alaska.

She is survived by five sisters, Janet and her husband Milton Kriefels, Joan and her husband Wilmer Wohlers, Janice and her husband Howard Meadows, all three of Syracuse, Neb., Ann Means of Loveland, Colo., and Jean Walker of Beckley, W.V.; a sister-in-law, Margaret and her husband Arnold Johnson of Ellensburg; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday, May 19 at Steward and Williams Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 20, at the First Lutheran Church in Ellensburg. The Rev. David Droegemueller will officiate. Concluding service and burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

The family suggest memorials to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Program, c/o Jerry Bennett, 1011 Capitol Avenue, Ellensburg, WA 98926 or to the Ellensburg Retired Senior Volunteer Program, P O Box 519, Ellensburg, WA 98926.
