Charlotte was a resident of Mableton, Cobb, Georgia, for 50 years.

1964 to 2014

Charlotte grew up in the German village called Wilmette and graduated in 1948 from New Trier High School located in Winnetka, Cook, Illinois. Her high school was named after the German city, Trier. My grandfather's family lived in Trier. There was a short period of time when her family moved to Steven's Point, Wisconsin. This occurred after her father retired from the postal service after 35 years as a mailman. Charlotte loved living in Steven's Point. The family moved back to the same house they owned at 1634 Walnut Avenue in Wilmette, Cook, Illinois.

Before moving to Mableton, GA, Charlotte lived in Wilmette, IL; Steven's Point, WI; Glenview, IL; Norfolk, VA; Port Lyautey, Morocco; and Rota, Spain.

She retired from Dobbins Air Force Base on April 15, 2011, after 26 years of devoted service.

Charlotte enjoyed working in her yard, singing in the church choir, walking, bicycling, traveling and square dancing.

Charlotte died of lung cancer at Kennesaw Mountain Tranquility in Marietta, Cobb, Georgia. It was very surprising to all that knew her because Charlotte was always a very healthy and active woman. Some think she breathed asbetos at work and this was the cause of her lung cancer. Unfortunately, there is no proof. (She never smoked.)

A one page handwritten biography of Charlotte's life was written by her father, John Schmitz. I found this paper in Tom Lyle's things in September, 2023, after Tom died in April, 2020.

Charlotte Marie Schmitz was born on May 6th, 1930. She was baptized in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wilmette, Ill, and also attended St. Joseph's School. She entered New Trier High School in September 1944. She graduated from this school in Jun 1947 (should be 1948). She immediately started to work for Illinois Bell Telephone Company in the Wilmette office. She was married to James Lyle of Atlanta, Georgia on March 5th, 1951. She give birth to a baby girl Dec 20th, 1951. A son was born on February 10, 1953. Both children were born at Great Lakes Hospital. LAST FIGHT

A face that is always on my mind,

A smile I have seen a million times,

Two eyes that would light up the sky at night,

One last battle you could not fight,

The day was long, then night then morn.

I knew that soon you would be gone,

I clasped your hand so warm in mine,

Soon we would be out of time,

To stay with us you fought so hard,

A million pieces went my heart,

Now a photo I look at to see your smile,

I keep your number on my speed dial,

A video I watch to hear your voice,

This I do.... I have no choice.,

But great memories I will always keep with me,

Your love in my heart for eternity,

I never got to say goodbye,

To understand why, I can but try,

Waiting in heaven from this moment on,

'Till God asks you to bring me home....

____________ೋღ☃ღೋ ____________

REMEMBERING MY MOTHER

My Mother seems so far away from me,

On that beautiful white shore across the sea.

Yet I remember love's soft glow upon her face,

And the feel of her touch and tender embrace.

When I am weary from the burdens I've borne,

And the path is unclear and I feel so forlorn,

I remember her loving support was always near,

And her advice made the path ahead seem clear.

When I feel there is no one who seems to care,

Or when the heartache seems too hard to bear,

I remember how she always stood by my side,

And would tenderly wipe away the tears I cried.

When there are moments of great joy and pride,

And I wish my Mother was standing at my side,

I remember she saw more than I thought I could be,

And know I owe my triumphs to her belief in me.

When I reminisce about the things she used to say,

And I miss her and think she is so far away,

I remember what she gave lives on through me,

And one day I'll see her on the shore across the sea.

THE DAY GOD CALLED YOU HOME

God looked around his garden and found an empty place,

He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face.

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.

God's garden must be beautiful he always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering he knew you were in pain.

He knew that you would never get well on earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb.

So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered, 'Peace be Thine'.

It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn't go alone,

For part of us went with you the day God called you home.

____________ೋღ☃ღೋ____________

MEET YOU AT THE GATE

A beautiful garden now stands alone,

missing the one who nurtured it

But now she is gone,

Her flowers still bloom, and the sun it still shines,

But the rain is like tear drops, for the ones left behind,

The weeds lay waiting to take the gardens beauty away,

But the beautiful memories of its keeper are in our hearts to stay,

She loved every flower even some that were weeds,

So much love she would plant with each little seed,

But just like her flowers she was part of God's plan,

So when it was her time he reached down his hand,

He look through the Garden searching for the best,

That's when he found Mom, it was her time to rest,

It was hard for those who loved her, to just let her go,

But God had a spot in his garden, that needed a gentle soul,

So when you start missing Mom, remember if you just wait,

When God has a spot in his garden,

She'll meet you at the gate....

In November 2021, I was still sorting through my mother's things, and found this prayer on the back of an Advent Penance Service Bulletin from Charlotte's church. It spoke to me, Sandy, because I was having a very difficult time in 2021.

"The Living Spirit"

Lord,

I am often filled with fear when I

think of the future.

I am haunted by past mistakes and

hurts.

afraid of what the future might hold

and I feel paralyzed.

I surrender it all to you now

I ask you to heal all that is

wounded in

me and trust you to take care of all I

worry about.

You are the one

who makes all things new.

With you I go forward,

securely and joyfully,

into freedom.

Amen
