Johnny S. Catoe
COLUMBIA - On the morning of January 17, 2017, Johnny S. Catoe passed away in Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 85 years old.

Johnny was born in Kershaw, SC, on April 28, 1931. He was the second child and first son of Edison "Ted" Catoe and Gertrude "Katie" Catoe.

Johnny moved with his family from Kershaw to Columbia, SC, when he was eight years old. He started his first job at a local pharmacy at nine, delivering customer orders. Times were tough during those days, and Johnny always took most of the money he earned and left it under his mother's pillow, to help with expenses.

As Johnny grew into a young man, he was adventurous and fun loving, and attended and graduated Columbia High School in 1949. He pulled many pranks with friends, including wearing a Halloween mask that caused his friend's sister to faint upon opening the door. It was during this time Johnny developed a deep passion and love for motorcycles. His first motorcycle was an Indian Flathead that cost $25. He later moved to BSA's, and participated in many endurance runs, winning numerous trophies and awards. In order to support his love of motorcycles, he got a job at Jenkins Brothers, and learned to be a mechanic.

Johnny's love of motorcycles was only exceeded by his love for Elizabeth "Betty" Gibson, whom he married on July 21, 1951, and became a hardworking and dedicated family man. He was drafted in 1954, serving 18 months overseas in the U.S. Army. He and Betty had 3 children during the next 10 years while working as a diesel mechanic at R.C. Motor-lines, moving up to a shop manager. He was an excellent mechanic and people called him frequently to work on their car. He was always available, and willing to help, and on most occasions, he only accepted what people could afford to pay. And every evening when he came home from work, he never failed to give his children a ride on his treasured motorcycle.

Johnny built the family a new house in 1964 and put together college plans for his children to attend the University of South Carolina. During this time, he faithfully took the family to Florida every year on vacation, where he taught them to swim and body surf. He was strict but loving with his children, and always ready with a warm smile and funny joke, providing encouragement and support, which also extended to everyone he met. He was an active member of Earlewood Baptist Church, and ate breakfast every Sunday morning before church with his beloved Mother.

Johnny later moved to Cherokee Kenworth, as a shop foreman, from which he eventually retired.

Johnny enjoyed his retirement years visiting and keeping his grandchildren, attending or watching any Gamecock sport, following NASCAR, and being an active deacon at Earlewood Baptist Church. While he was strict with his children, his grandchildren could do no wrong. He and Betty spent many hours spoiling all of them equally. And he never tired of hearing or saying "How 'bout them Gamecocks". When Betty developed Alzheimer's, Johnny took over the cooking, laundry and grocery shopping, so he could be her full-time care giver for 8 years.

Our Daddy was a self-made man, who taught us the values of faith, family and friends, hard work, perseverance, an unwillingness to give up no matter the odds and how to laugh and be happy no matter what the situation. Even during his battle with Parkinson's, he worked hard to overcome the limitations, joking and laughing with the doctors, therapists and care givers he encountered along the way.

Johnny was preceded in death by his first son, Johnny Catoe Jr., his father, Ted, his sister, Ruby, his wife, Betty, and his mother, Katie.

Johnny is survived by his children, Cindy Scott-Brunson (Bud), Michael Catoe (Cindy) and Liz Shealy (Mike); and eight wonderful grandchildren, Eric, Whitney, Johnny, Zack, Mack, Rebecca, Rachel and Kendall. He is also survived by his loving sister, Sylvia and brother-in-law, Jimmy, and his caring brother, Errol, and sister-in-law, Saundra and also his sister-in-law, Betty Gibson, whom he loved dearly. He leaves behind a number of special nephews and nieces and their children, who always considered Johnny more than an uncle.

Johnny's celebration of life will be held Friday, January 20th, at Earlewood Baptist Church. Visitation will be at 11a.m. in the sanctuary, with the service following at 12 noon. He will be buried with his beloved wife Betty in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.

Special thanks to Sylvia and Jimmy, who never missed a Wednesday evening visiting and laughing with Daddy and always took him to get his hair cut. And Errol and Saundra, for sharing their time and love by bringing him catfish stew and hot dogs from Jimmy's market. Special thanks also to Betty Gibson, for always checking up on him and visiting him frequently. Also, to David Gibson, who made sure Daddy went to as many Gamecock events, as possible. And to Jim Meetze, who visited Daddy weekly to discuss cars and motorcycles. We'd also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Donna Hartzog and Lori Turkvant and Wilbur Boston, his devoted and loving caregivers. Also, our special thanks to Daddy's doctors and therapists and the kind and loving staff in the ER and on the 5th floor at Providence Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Earlewood Baptist church, 2930 River Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29201, in Johnny's loving memory and honor.
