An article printed on page 3 of The Quincy Daily Whig, Wednesday, September 28, 1892, gave an account of the deaths of J. P. Kelly and his wife, the former Retta May Willard.
At the time, the couple were living with her mother, Mrs. Tuley, and also Mrs. Kelly's widowed sister, Mrs. Anna Thompson, and Mrs. Thompson's two small children: a girl, Mel, about 5 years old, and a boy, Willie, about 8. Another sister "travels with Miller Brothers" as an actress, said Mrs. Thompson.
Retta May (Willard) Kelly was born and raised near Quincy, Adams county, Illinois, and was 28 at the time of death; J. P. Kelly was about 30, and was once a railroad engineer. He had also, at one point in time, played third base for the North Denver baseball team. He had been in Denver, Colorado, for about six years at the time of his death. Mrs. Kelly had worked occasionally in theater, including a leading role in the local production of "Last Days of Pompeii."
