A Tribute to S. I. !Gobs (1945-1985)
By Dirck Kuzatjike editor and owner of The Marubian newspaper front page June 2012

On the 4th May every year since 1986, hundreds of people gather in Ozondje cemetery to commemorate the life of S. I. !Gobs at his tomb on the anniversary of his passing.
Simson Immanuel Nama Madawa !Gobs was born on the 31st December 194-5 in Omaruru. He qualified as a teacher at Augustinium Training College in 1966 where he started his teaching career the year after. For a few years he taught at Cornelius Goreseb Secondary School in Khorixas, before going for a short stint at Rio Tinto mine as a laboratory assistant. He lived most of his life in Khorixas, where he became a businessman, politician, traditional leader and a renowned human right activist Those who got a chance to see this great man in action described him a selfless man who worked for fairness, justice, and socio-economic upliftment of everyone, regardless of the circumstances. His vocation of multiple dimensions made him a role model for many people, especially in Okombahe, Uis, Omaruru and Khorixas, where he also had a string of businesses. The commemoration of S. I. !Gobs started in 1986 to reflect on his community activism and to celebrate his selfless life. Mr. !Gobs had 38 children of which five were from his marriage to Frieda !Gobs. Among his many outstanding children there is one who dared to follow his father's footsteps in service to others. Sebastian Ignatius !Gobs, born 4 October 1967 in Omaruru, is one of !Gobs sons. Sebastian is a member of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and has been a member of the National Council of Namibia since 2OO4-. He has been a member of the UDF since the party's inception in 1989 and graduated with a diploma in urban planning from UNAM in 20O5. Today he represents Khorixas Constituency in the Kunene Regional Council. Following his 2004 election, he was chosen as the UDF's only member of the 3rd National Council. Prior to entering national politics in 2004, !Gobs was a member of the town council of Khorixas from 1999-2001 and Usakos town council from 20O1-2O04. While not putting pressure on him to be exactly like his father, one can readily say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Among !Gobs' massive estate is the !Gobs Hoekie (corner) array of buildings that is situated behind Hakahana informal settlement. Asked as to what are the family plans regarding the !Gobs Hoekie, Sebastian was very optimistic that he, the heir to the !Gobs Hoekie, will turn that estate into something memorable when he secures funds.
S. I !Gobs died in 1985 in a mysterious car accident near Okombahe. In 1987 a new school was named after the great advocate of education.
May his soul rest in peace.
