The following narrative is comprised of information gleaned from several sources, primarily uboat.net. My father was on the American motor merchant Lake Osweya which was torpedoed and sunk by U-96 shortly after Empire Seal was sunk. However, unlike Empire Seal, there were no survivors from Lake Osweya. Please, do not include this paragraph with the following narrative should you choose to include the narrative in this Memorial.

Narrative:
Henry John Maguire, carpenter, was on the British motor merchant, Empire Seal, as it left New York on Feb 19, 1942. With a cargo of 4500 tons of steel, the unescorted ship was bound for Halifax and then to Belfast. Late that evening, the Empire Seal was sighted by German submarine U-96 southeast of Sable Island and a single torpedo was fired, hitting in the foreship. The ship began settling by the bow, but it didn't sink. Sometime after midnight, in the early hours of Feb 20th, a coup de grace was fired and the Empire Seal immediately sank.

There were 56 people on board at the time of the attack; Henry John Maguire was the only one lost. Everyone else was picked up by the British CAM ship Empire Flame and taken to Halifax.
