He was a PFC in the Marine Corp and says that this is the same as a major in the Army.
He went overseas in January 1944 and was on Guadalcanal until June 1944 when the Marines hit Guam and Saipan. He then went back to Guadalcanal until the Okinawa campaign which was April 1, 1945.
He received the Purple Heart for being wounded on Guadalcanal on July 26, 1944 and was then taken to a hospital ship between Guam and Saipan.
While on the hospital ship he ran into Lt. Ben Trickey, from Marshalltown who was also wounded about the same time as Haupert. He also met Roy Stille and Dave Shriner, who was an All-American at the University of Wisconsin.
He says that the highlight of the entire campaign was being on the hospital ship with clean sheets and good food.
