One of Marshall's most highly respected and prominent businessmen died this week. T. P. Hubbard, former Shelter Insurance agent, Searcy County Judge, auctioneer and overall entrepreneur passed away on Monday, December 16th, 2013, at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System in Little Rock, AR. He was 80 years old.

T. P. was born on January 19th, 1933 to Penn and Lucille Hubbard. He was the eldest of six children. T.P's parents ran a feed store on the Northwest corner of the Marshall Square and lived on property now occupied by the Boston Rural Health Center. Early on his father bought him a Shetland pony and instilled in him a love of horses that continued throughout his life.

T.P. graduated from Marshall High School in 1950 and in 1952 married Vance Lee Renfroe. Soon after the wedding, T.P. was drafted into the Army and served two years during the Korean conflict.

He acquired the MFA Insurance Agency in 1965 and bought the feed mill west of the Noah Bryan store in 1967. Later, he left the feed business to focus on other business opportunities. Always busy and looking for personal growth, he became a realtor and went to auctioneers school and soon became one of the area's most popular auctioneers.

In 1978 T.P. decided to run for the office of Searcy County Judge and sought to prove that ethical candidates could run and win the office-and his entire campaign was waged with this objective. For instance, he bought a big ad in the Mtn. Wave promising he would not buy votes! In so doing, he may well have been the force that ended that practice once and for all. T.P. constantly made it known he was deeply concerned about the soiled image this county had around the entire state and believed this largely hindered our greatly needed economic growth. Many knowledgeable people are of the opinion this ad, coupled with T.P.'s determination changed the Democratic Party and overall politics in Searcy County for the better. He was elected in 1978 and served two years in office.

T.P. retired from Shelter Insurance after thirty-nine years. Throughout his career he won several agency recognitions and was a well-respected agent. But what T.P. enjoyed most was the opportunity to work with and provide a service to the people of Searcy County. Even after retirement T.P continued to be active in Searcy County as a founding member of the South Mountain Volunteer Fire Dept., where he also served on the board. T. P. was also instrumental in securing the South Mountain Water Association along with other community leaders; he served on the board and was as an officer of this organization as well. T was a proud member of the Searcy County Veterans Memorial Association and took part in the completion of the VFW building. T. P. remained an excellent rancher, cattleman, and a true cowboy all his life.

T.P. was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather (Papa TV), brother and friend. You would always know T.P was around by either his whistle or a song. T.P always believed the best about people.

T.P. was a faithful member of the Marshall Church of Christ for thirty-five years where he greatly enjoyed leading singing and serving as the church treasurer for many years.

T.P is survived by his wife of over sixty-one years, Vance Lee (Renfroe) Hubbard who worked alongside him throughout their marriage. Other survivors include his two daughters Lori Cossey (Brady) of Austin, AR and Julie Smith (Eddie) of Conway, AR; his grandchildren April Mathis (Dusty), Ashlee Smith, and Seth Cossey; and his great-grandchildren Ava & her brother Dax Mathis. T.P.'s brothers and sisters also survive him and include Ida McClain, Nancy Wood, James Hubbard, Murphy Hubbard and Dr. Ron Hubbard.

T.P is preceded in death by his eldest granddaughter, Dara Cossey and his parents.
