Calvin Howard Adkins, 83, of New Baden, Texas passed away at his home on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Thaxton Adkins. Their marriage was filled with love, adventure, hard work, joy and devotion to each other and their family. He will forever be remembered and cherished as a loving husband, father, granddad and friend.
Born December 2, 1930 in Ironton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Howard and Lucy Adkins. He attended Ironton High School, and at the age of 17, enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he proudly served his country for the next 23 years. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam War and retired from the United States Air Force at the rank of Master Sergeant.
After retiring in 1970 at the age of 40, Cal began a lifetime of successful entrepreneurial businesses. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Shriners, earned the York and Scottish Rites, and was a member of the Royal Court of Jesters. Cal enjoyed traveling all over the world with Mary and their many friends, attending Air Force reunions, Model A conventions and tours, cross country RV trips, cruises and many group tours. He was fortunate to have visited all 50 States, as well as 32 countries around the world.
Survivors include his sons Phillip and wife Yvette Adkins of Waco, Miles Adkins of Clear Lake City, Bryan and wife Dana Adkins of Cedar Park, Bradley Adkins of New Baden, daughters Beverly Wadley and husband Bruce of Granbury, and Sharon Schwartz and husband Mark of Houston, fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also, brother John Adkins and wife Vicki of Tampa, Florida, brothers-in-law Howard Thaxton of Lexington, Georgia and Frank Shurling of Athens, Georgia and sister-in-law Joyce Thaxton Mosley of Athens, Georgia, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, where he will be buried with Full Military Honors and Masonic Rites.
