HONORED PIONEER PREACHER PASSES AWAY

Elder J. D. Thompson, Veteran of Civil War and One of Most Widely Known Pioneer Ministers, was born in Kentucky March 30, 1843

Elder Jack D. Thompson, died at his home west of Iberia Friday, following an invalidism of several months duration, and in his death Miller County losses one of its pioneer preachers, one who had up to a few years ago when he quit
preaching, perhaps baptised more Miller county people than any other man.

Elder Thompson was born in Kentucky March 30, 1843 being the son Buck Thompson, who came to Miller County with his family when Jack was only one year of age. The son grew to manhood on the farm where the Iberia Junior College is now standing. When quite young, At about 16 years of age, he was united in marriage to Miss Emily Bowen. To this union 17 children were born, nine of whom are living, they being Jas. Thompson of St. Louis, Riley Thompson of California, Gillum Thompson of South Missouri, Andrew Thompson, Charley Thompson of Hawkeye, Wesley Thompson of Kansas, Newton Thompson of Colorado, Mrs Edward Allen of Indiana and Mrs Edward Shelton of Hawkeye. The first wife died and he then married Mrs. Mary J. Shelton Duncan about 1893. She and one child by the marriage, Mrs. Lonnie Wall of near Iberia. Two step sons, Judge T. J. Duncan and Hamon Duncan both near Iberia also survive him.

Elder Thompson was ordained to the ministry in the year 1869 and for many years was a prominent preacher of the Church of Christ. He held numerous meetings at Tuscumbia and many other points where early churches of his faith were established. He was a man strong in his convictions, fearless and honest; men of this .......(Unreadable)

He died in the neighborhood where he spent all his life, save one year, among his relatives and friends, who came in large numbers to attend his funeral whcih was held Sunday at Pleasant Hill with services conducted by the Rev. R. F. Moneymaker. "Uncle Jack" will be greatly missed by neighbors and friends.
