Thomas "Tom" B. Moriarty Sr. was born on Sept. 5, 1914, the second generation of Moriartys to be born in Durham, N.H. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire, and was proud to have served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

He owned a plumbing and heating business, and was the landlord of an apartment house in Durham, but was best known as an RFD mail carrier out of the Durham Post Office for 38 years, from 1949 to 1987. Tom had been president both of the Lion's Club, of Portsmouth, and also of the Holy Name Society at the Church of St. Thomas More in Durham.

Tom was an avid mountain and rock climber. He hiked the White Mountains extensively, and climbed the Matterhorn, in Zermott, Switzerland. In his later years, he took up bicycling and writing poetry.

Tom enjoyed and relished his Irish heritage, visiting Ireland numerous times, where he toured the countryside by bicycle.

Tom leaves his wife of 73 years, Grace (Biskup) Moriarty, and two children, daughter, Patricia Moriarty Martin and her husband, Leo, of Westport, Maine, and son, Thomas B. Moriarty Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Durham.

He was affectionately known as "Pa" to his four grandchildren, Michael Moriarty and Sean Moriarty, both of Durham, and Christopher Martin and Suze Martin Wallace, of Ohio, and his five great-grandchildren.

Tom is predeceased by his brothers, Maurice and Joseph, and sister, Mary.

Tom spent his last three years at the Pines Assisted Living Facility in Newmarket, where he was lovingly cared for and will be fondly remembered by the staff and residents.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4-6pm at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10am at the Church of St. Thomas More, Madbury Road, Durham. Burial will take place at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.
