Thomas C. Yarnall was very important in the life of St. Mary's. He was an early advocate of the Oxford Movement, the so-called High Church movement in the Anglican church. Under his leadership the earlier white frame church was replaced with a much larger, gothic stone building (the present building) designed to be more in keeping with that movement. Membership grew dramatically, in part because of the development of the surrounding neighborhood during the late nineteenth century. St. Mary's is listed in E. Digby Balzell's 'The Philadelphia Gentleman' as one of the larger society churches of that time. In the 1890s the chancel was enlarged to receive the quite amazing marble and mosaic high altar that was an Italian exposition piece at the World's Fair of 1876.
