Kerrville Couple Killed In Highway Collision (8 column across headline)

Crash Near Leon Springs Monday
Night Takes Lives Of Mr. And
Mrs. O.P. Ramsey, Bexar Man

Mr. and Mrs. O.P. Ramsey were fatally injured last night near Leon Springs on the San Antonio Highway when the automobile in which they were traveling collided with a station wagon driven by Dennis Aldridge, 41, San Antonio lumber company employee, who also died of injuries. It was the second shocking tragedy within three days to take the lives of five Hill county residents in the grinding collision of automobiles involved in head-on wrecks. The accident occured at approximately 7:20 p.m.
Mr. Ramsey, 69, and Mrs. Ramsey, 60, were traveling towards San Antonio in their 1947 coupe when the station wagon, according to investigating officers, left his side of the highway and rammed headlong into the Kerrville car. Force of the impact drove the motors of both vehicles into the front seats. The Ramsey auto was knocked backward 16 feet from the point of collision and Aldridge's new station wagon overturned in a ditch.
Ramsey was killed instantly. Mrs. Ramsey was thrown from the car and lived only a short time after the crash.
Mr. Ramsey was Tax Assessor and Collector for the City of Kerrville, and had been a municipal employee since May 15, 1950. Previously he had been in the filling station business and at one time was a Dodge automobile dealer in Kerrville.
The couple moved to Kerrville in 1935 from San Antonio. Mr. Ramsey formerly was an official with Ford Motor Co. in Louisville, Houston and Pleasanton.
City Manager Wm. Pitctick expressed the deep regret of city employees over the shocking tragedy and paid high tribute to Mr. Ramsey's devotion to duty. It was Mr. Ramsey who smoothed the transition from handkept machine methods instituted by the city and from the old system of tax rolls to the unit system. Pitstick pointed out that much of the city's successful efforts to retain its favorable tax rate during the past five years was traceable to the excellent collections under Mr. Ramsey. His work produced 96 percent of collections under the current $1.60 structure. The Kerrville Tax Assessor was District Chairman of Texas Association of Tax Assessors & Collectors.
Orin Palmer Ramsey was born in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Ramsey was a native of Carthage, Illinois. The couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary last August.
Mr. Ramsey is survived by two sisters, Miss Margaret Ramsey and Miss Florence Ramsey, both of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Ramsey is survived by a son, R. R. Tarr of Kerrville, and a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Clements of Kerrville.
Arrangements have been completed for the double funeral services to be held at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the First Christian Church with the Rev. Eugene Peters, pastor, officiating, and assisted by the Rev. Richard Ryan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Garden of Memories under direction of Smith Funeral Home.
