Ferris was the only son of Ferris Smith Fitch Jr. (of Fitchburg, MI) and Lettie May Humphrey (of Pontiac, MI).

Ferris graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in law in 1917. Shortly thereafter in WWI he was a captain in the U.S. Army in France in 1918-1919, and coincident with his service there also earned the Legion of Honor from the French Government. He later became Lt. Gov. of Michigan from 1932-33 under Gov. William Comstock.

He married Marion Rose Hodges on a Tuesday night, on 21 June of 1921 at her parent's home on Pine Lake.
They went on to have a family of five, two girls and three boys.

A newspaper article of 1933 said:

"Ferris Humphrey Fitch comes from good old Wolverine stock. His grandfather, Ferris S. Fitch, homesteader the Lansing acres on which the state capitol now stands, but later abandoned his claim and moved 20 miles further east. During the turbulent Civil War days he was elected to the state senate. His son, Ferris S. Fitch, Jr., was the Democratic superintendent of public instruction during the only years between 1891 and 1933 when Michigan Democrats were in complete control of state government. Major Fitch has a leading place in the bar of Detroit, where he is in partnership with the son of former Supreme Court Justice William L. Carpenter. Governor Comstock gave the name "assistant governor" to his guide, counsellor and friend on the day he was appointed."

Ferris' obituary said in part:

"A resident of the Farms for more than 50 years, Mr. Fitch was captain in the U.S. Army in France in 1918 and 1919 and he earned the Legion of Honor from the French Government. He was graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in law in 1917. Mr. Fitch served as lieutenant governor in 1932 and 1933 under Michigan governor William Comstock. An avid lawn bowler and curler, Mr. Fitch was a charter member of the Detroit Curling Club."

He is sorely missed...
