Calista was born November 2nd, 1907 in Buckley, WA to Clarence Edward and Jennette (Wilson) Whitney. She attended the University of Washington, and Central Washington University, where she earned her teaching certificate.
She married Walter Louis Crutcher November 29, 1930. She and her husband moved to Berkeley, CA in 1936 and were active in the Berkeley Women's Club. There they met life long friends Christle and Keith Sleeper. Calista was widowed in 1967.
Calista moved to Rossmoor (a retirement community) in Walnut Creek, CA. There, she met Alva Guy Starr and they were married March 30, 1969. The Starrs traveled the world with the Sleepers. Calista was widowed once more in 1982.
Calista was an avid reader, bridge player and lawn bowler. She loved a party and had a passion for dancing. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Federated Women's Club.
Her younger sister, Elizabeth "Lee" (Whitney) Anderson Holm preceded her from this life in March 2010. She was also predeceased by nephews Lynn Whitney Anderson (1934 - 1996) and John Neal Anderson (1935 - 1982), and John's children Kimberly Elizabeth (Anderson) Lehmkuhl (1958 - 2004) and Kris Benton Anderson (1961 - 1997).
At the time of her death, she was survived by nephew Robert Lee Anderson of Enumclaw and his daughters - her grand nieces - Denise (Anderson) Cole of Redmond, WA; Gwen Anderson of Pullman, WA; and Paula (Anderson) Jensen of Lakewood, CO. Also by great grand nieces and nephews Devon, Brennan, and Katherine Cole, Daniel and Emily VanOrden, and Leila (Jensen) Gillespie. Her nephew John's widow, Beth (Brooks) Anderson Runkel of Oakleaf, TX also survives her. In addition to her adopted niece and nephew, Janice (Sleeper) Legge of Orinda, CA and Bill Sleeper of Palm Springs, CA.
Calista chose cremation, and her ashes were lovingly scattered under the Golden Gate Bridge.
