OGDEN-- Sharon Kaye Harris Best, 62, passed away peacefully after a six-year battle with cancer late Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at McKay Dee Hospital, surrounded by her family.
She was born on October 25, 1936 in Ogden, Utah to Everett Clyde and Clarabelle Russell Harris, the ninth of ten children.
Sharon attended elementary and junior high school in the Weber School District and graduated from Weber High School. She received an Associate's degree from Weber College, and graduated with a BA in Journalism from Brigham Young University. While at Weber College, she was a member of a sorority and several clubs. She was very involved in student activities and was voted Homecoming Queen.
After college graduation, she worked in Los Angeles for an insurance company. Later, she returned to Utah and worked for the Forest Service and as a social worker for the state.
She married Richard Brown Best on July 14, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple. Her highest priority and greatest joy was her family.
She was involved in the community as a member of various civic clubs, including "La Leche League," "Homemakers Club," and "Mothers of Twins Club," where she served as
president.
Her interests, outside of family, included dancing, singing, creating scrapbooks and working in her flower garden.
She was an active member of the LDS Church and served as a Stake Missionary (California), Primary president, a teacher in Church auxiliaries, and held many Relief Society callings, including Stake board member.
She is survived by her husband and children,
Michelle, Derek, Ryan (Lesa), and Devin Best, of Ogden; Blythe (Lee) Rackham, Angela and Nanette Best, of Layton; and Laurel (Mike) Garrard, of Sunset. Her greatly loved grandchildren are Katrena, Arianna, and Kaelby.
Sharon is also survived by two brothers and three sisters, James Harris, Provo; Boyce Harris, Issaquah, WA; Everal Cheney, La Mesa, CA; Peggy Williams, St. George; and Sonia Baczuk, Florence, MT.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Russell and Thayne Harris; and sisters Adele Harris and Marilyn Westman; nephews Matthew West and David B. Harris, and a sister-in-law Ramona Best Humphreys.
The family would like to thank Dr. Vincent L. Hansen, Dr. O. Wendell Hyde, Jr., and the McKay Dee Staff for their dedicated medical care.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 29, 11:00 a.m. at the Uintah 1st Ward building, 6660 S. 1775 E., Uintah (Ogden).
Friends may call at Leavitt's Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, one hour prior to services at the ward.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Interment, Washington Heights Memorial Park.
