A mass of Christian burial for Wanda Ann Pickett will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Church of the Little Flower in Evergreen with Father Rusty Rabalais officiating. Burial will follow at Church of the Little Flower Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home.

Wanda, 43 years of age, left this world on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 1:30 PM. She loved the outdoors, especially fishing but most of all she loved spending time with her family.

Those left to cherish her memories include her mother, Merline Pickett, of Bunkie, three brothers, David Pickett and friend Wendy Parker of Lafayette, Phil Pickett and wife Cheryl of Hessmer, Tony Pickett and wife Susan of Hessmer, three nieces, Codi Pickett, Lori Blood and Joni Longlois, two nephews, Keegan Pickett and Chance Ortego, and two great nieces, Blake and Peyton Longlois. She also left behind John Matherne, her partner and companion, and his two sons Corey and Brandon.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Pickett and her nephew, Chad Pickett.

Wanda was a graduate of Hessmer High School in 1987. After graduation, she attended trade school, worked at various jobs and finally found her home with The Avoyelles Journal where she happily worked for some nine years. She resigned from this job to pursue her love for children and become part of our education system. Wanda became a member of the Bunkie Elementary School staff five years ago. She worked as a reading interventionist and was soon loved and respected by the faculty, the staff and the students at Bunkie Elementary. This became evident when Wanda was voted the 2010 Support Personnel of the Year. Everyone in the B.E.S. family will remember her beautiful smile that brightened the day of everyone around her. A rosary will be held at 7:00 led by Chance Ortego preceded by soothing words of comfort by Reverend Dexter Compton, Jr.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Gary Redmond, Earl Pickett, Jr., Ricky Guillory, Keegan Pickett, Robert Johnson, and Allen Moreau. Honorary pall bearers are Benjamin Johnson and Corey Matherne.
