Susan was a Bangor high school teacher from 1854 to 1875. She also received a masters of art degree in 1875 from Colby College and studied at the laboratories of Asa Gray (author of Gray's Manual) and Jean Agassiz. As a result of their recommendations, she was appointed professor of natural history at Wellesley College in 1875 and became the first woman to organize and maintain a college-level department of botany. In the 1880s she was also the first woman admitted to the botanical lectures and laboratories of the University of Berlin.
