Groton - William L. Beaman Sr., 89, of Groton, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born on Oct. 9, 1924, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of the late Robert T. Beaman and Lena Belle (Hildreth) Beaman. He was married on June 12, 1954 to the late Elvira M. Zeppieri Beaman, who passed away on Aug. 20, 1998.
Bill was a veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He qualified onboard USS Flasher (SS 249) in 1943 and completed seven war patrols during WWII. Bill was awarded with a Bronze Star. He also served aboard the USS Quillback (SS 424), USS Harder (SS 568), USS Dogfish (SS 350), USS George Washington (SSBN 598), and USS Casimir Pulaski. Bill served from 1942 - 1968 and retired as an ENCS(SS). In 1958 he was named Sailor of the Year. He was of the Greatest Generation. Bill joined us at United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.,Groton Base in 1997, he was a Life and Holland Club member, honoring 50 yrs "Qualified in Submarines".
After Navy retirement, he was employed as an operator at the Water Filtration Plant in Groton and later retired from there too.
His survivors include two daughters, Nancy L. Shaw of Groton, Susan E. Thomson of Mystic; two sons, William L. Beaman Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, of Mystic, Robert F. Beaman of Groton; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, Mitchell Street, Groton, with a gathering to follow.
