John R. Adams, 85, of Beaver Street in Cooperstown, died Monday evening, Jan. 4, 1999, at The Meadows.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1913, in New York City, a son of William R. and Bridget (Gehrauty) Adams. He married Dorothy Smith on Nov. 20, 1935, in Richfield Springs. Mrs. Adams died on March 4, 1987.

John was a lifelong resident of Cooperstown and attended Cooperstown schools. A veteran of the United States Army, he served his country during World War II with the 421st Ordnance Evacuation Company. For a brief period of time he worked for the Clark Estates on their sheep farms but spent the majority of his career working as a gunsmith for Remington Arms in Ilion, retiring in 1972.

John was an avid sportsman, playing three sports in his high school years. He was also an accomplished golfer and will be remembered for being a part of the Forty Year Foursome. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, and will be lovingly remembered by his family and neighbors for his blackberry picking.

John was a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, the Native Sons of Cooperstown, the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128.

He was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Kathryn Vroman, and two brothers, James P. Adams and Joseph Adams.

John's family wishes to thank everyone at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, Woodside Hall, The Meadows, Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, and the Rev. Jeff Hale for their kind, considerate and understanding care during his illness.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the Cooperstown Veterans Club will be at a later date in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.
