Midland, Georgia- Mrs. Jeanne Marie Donaghey Bastone, 58, of Midland, Ga., died unexpectedly on Oct. 15, 2013, while traveling in Austin, Texas.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Christ Community Church with Pastor Keith Cowart officiating. A private Interment with Military Honors will be held in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Seale, Ala. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus.
Mrs. Bastone was born March 28, 1955, in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Gene Louis and Margaret (Reeves) Donaghey. She was a graduate of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla., where she was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. She was assigned to the Transportation Corps and served in the Panama Canal Zone. It was there that she met and married another officer, John Bastone. Mrs. Bastone finished her military service at Fort Bragg, N.C., attaining the rank of Captain.
In subsequent years, Mrs. Bastone was able to use her Spanish language skills in several settings, taking part in mission trips to South America and teaching Spanish at area schools, most recently at St. Luke's School in Columbus, where she worked with students in grades 3 to 5. In a tribute to Mrs. Bastone, the school released a statement saying: "Jeanne started teaching Spanish to grades 3rd-5th at St. Luke School in August 2011 and immediately endeared herself to her students and to our staff family. Stories of her kindness and thoughtful prayers of support are coming in from so many whose lives she touched."
Altogether, Mrs. Bastone spent more than 10 years in education, including three years with 21st Century children's enrichment program, several years at Calvary Christian and Westminster Christian schools and several local high schools.
Mrs. Bastone was an active member of Christ Community Church where she was engaged in missions ministries and her community group. At one time, she was also active in regional politics.
Mrs. Bastone was preceded in death by both of her parents. She is survived by her devoted husband of 33 years, Lt. Col. (Ret.) John Joseph Bastone of Columbus; a daughter, Gina Marie (husband Samuel Trevino) of Cambridge, Mass; and two sons, Capt. Anthony John Bastone of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and 1st Lt. Louis Andrew Bastone of Fort Stewart, Savannah, Ga. She is also survived by a sister, Barbara (Donaghey) Delp of Harleysville, Pa., and several nieces and a nephew.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mrs. Bastone's memory to Christ Community Church missions fund 4078 Milgen Road, Columbus, Ga., 31907.
