Anchorage resident KERWIN V. ''CURLEY'' MELARVIE, 77, died after a lengthy illness Nov. 22, 2001, at Providence Extended Care Center. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at All Saints Episcopal Church, with visitation for one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Jim Basinger will officiate. Burial will follow at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Mr. Melarvie was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Mandan, N.D., to Isabelle Brown and Vincent Melarvie. He served in the U.S. Navy on the Naval Oiler from 1943 to 1945. He moved to Kodiak in 1951 and worked as a civil servant on the U.S. Naval Base as a journeyman carpenter. In 1953, he traveled to California for a class and met his ''child bride,'' Jane, whom he married in 1954. He moved back to Kodiak and became a building contractor. Together, he and Jane had four children before moving to Anchorage in 1969. In 1971, he began working for the city of Anchorage as a plans examiner and by the time he retired in 1983, he was a chief building inspector for the municipality. After retirement, he and his wife of 47 years traveled across the United States in their motor home, which was something he loved. He also loved to garden and build beautiful furniture, and was a master finish carpenter. Most of all, he loved to dance. Mr. Melarvie was a lifetime member of the Kodiak Elks Lodge and a recent member of the Fraternal Order of the Moose. His family wrote: ''Curley was a strong, wonderful husband and father. He was dearly loved by his family and will be missed immensely.'' Survivors include his wife, Jane; daughter, Kathleen Filori of Auburn, Wash.; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Thomas and Rienhard Howard and Sandra and Marcus Methonen, all of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, Stephan and Valerie Melarvie of Anchorage; 11 grandchildren; and sisters, Jean, Patty and Sandra. His parents, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Suite 204, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
