OBIT:

Private services for Mrs. Mabel Kelsey Rugg, 94, the daughter of pioneer Saticoy residents and a native of the county, were conducted today. Mrs. Rugg died Monday in her home, 9460 Telephone Road, Ventura, after a long illness.

Mrs. Rugg, one of the six children of Theodore and Sophia [Earle] Kelsey, pioneer ranchers in the Saticoy area, was born in the old Kelsey ranch home that formerly stood at the intersection of Telephone and Kimball roads on August 10, 1876.

Her father came to the Santa Clara Valley in 1867 and raised walnuts on land purchased for about $8 an acre. He was also credited with bringing the first lima beans to Ventura County.

Mrs. Rugg, the last surviving child of the Kelseys, went to high school in Ventura when it was located where the Ventura Post Office now stands. She was valedictorian of her class of 1896.

In an interview printed in the Star-Free Press in 1954, Mrs. Rugg recalled her family hauling water from the springs for both garden and domestic use …the old Saticoy jail…and an attempt one made to establish a second town, West Saticoy, with stores and a post office built on Telephone Road. "The site was finally abandoned and most of the buildings moved to Oxnard," Mrs. Rugg remembered.

She graduated from the University of California in the class of 1900, married the late Chester Rugg and lived on the Hawaiian Islands for a number of years. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist of Ventura and of the Mother Church in Boston, Mass.

Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Hope Kramer of Camarillo, Mrs. Theodora Fleming of Lakeport, Calif.; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Private cremation will be at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park with interment in Santa Paula Cemetery beside her late husband who died in 1903. The H. B. Skillin mortuary, Santa Paula, direct arrangements.
