Age 93, passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2007. He was born on October 25, 1913 in Orange Township the son of Lawrence and Elma (Luscher) Sandborn. Mr. Sandborn was an area lifelong farmer with his son Luke. He served on the local School Board for 30 years, Intermediate School Board for 4 years, Soil Conservation Board for 15 years, Sunfield Elevator Board for 20 years and the Maynard Allen State Bank Board for 26 years. Along with his son John, owned and operated Sandborn Equipment in Portland. His passions in life, were farming and his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Herbert, Columbus, Jacob, Riley, Lawrence, Allen and Raymond and a sister, Vera. Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Fannie; children John (Ann) Sandborn of Sunfield, Sharon (George) Zarka of Lansing, Cynthia (Dale) Hefty of Ohio and Luke (Jane) Sandborn of Sunfield; 12 grandchildren; 9 great- grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be conducted by Pastor David Flagel at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 14, 2007 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. Melborn was the son of Elma Luscher and Lawrence W. Sandborn.
On April 8, 1935 Melborn married Fannie Rogers. They were the parents of: John (Ann) Sandborn of Sunfield, Sharon (George) Zarka of Lansing, Cynthia Hefty of Ohio, and Luke (Jane) Sandborn of Sunfield, Michigan.
