Mrs. Ida May Cowell, 77, member of a pioneer Kittitas Valley family, died Monday night at Sorensen Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Born in Ellensburg February 22, 1880, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. Ward Cooke and granddaughter of the early pioneer couples, the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles P. Cooke and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wheeler.

She was married in 1910 to Thomas E. Cowell who preceded her in death in November 1945. In the fall of 1887, her parents built the roadhouse on the Colockum Pass, six miles form the old Cooke ranch. There they lived until 1892, when they sold the station to Mr. and Mrs. George Wheeler in the spring. The Cooke family then moved to Wenatchee, where it spent the summer; in the fall moving to Elberton, Wash. They lived at Elberton two years.

From Elberton, the family moved by wagon to Pendleton, Ore., working harvests. They lived at Grant's Pass, Ore., for a short while and resided four years until 1897 at Colburn, Ore. Then, driving to Portland, the Cooke family went by boat up the Columbia River to The Dalles, crossed into Washington and traveled an old freight road to Yakima.

The family returned here from Yakima by the west side road. After visiting relatives, the Cooke's returned to the Colockum for two years, then moved back into the Kittitas Valley and settled in the Fairview District.

Surviving are one son, Elwin E. Cowell, Yakima; a daughter, Mrs. Clara Charlton, Ellensburg; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Edward Cooke, Grandview; Norman Cooke, Budd Cooke and Carl Cooke, Ellensburg, and two sisters, Mrs. Susan Huss and Mrs. Marjorie Gillis, Ellensburg.

Funeral services will be held a the Evenson Chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.
