Frederick Stephen "Steve" Kurtz, age 71, lifetime resident of Whatcom Co, died December 11, 1997 at his residence. He was born March 15, 1926 in Bellingham to Frederick E. and Grace (MacNeil) Kurtz. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1944 and attended the University of Washington.

May 25, 1957 Steve married Joanne Bornstein. Mr. Kurtz served in the US Army Air Corp 1944-1946. He worked as a reporter, columnist and assistant city editor for the Bellingham Herald 16 years and worked 20 years in public information at WWU until retiring in 1988.

Mr. Kurtz was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Sacred Heart Church, Mt Baker Toppers, life member VFW and past commander of American Legion Post #7.

Steve sang with the "POETS" Quartet and they were past Dist. Champions.

Survived by his loving wife, Joanne Kurtz of Bellingham; sons Kevin Kurtz of Bellingham, Anthony Kurtz of Ellensburg and Max Kurtz of Bellingham; daughters Mary Thurston of Bellingham, Helen Null of Everett and Ann Wiegand of Ferndale; a sister Katherine Becker of Bellingham; and 8 grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, December 16, 1997 at Sacred Heart Church. Military Honors by American Legion Post #7. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Whatcom Co or charity of your choice.
