R. M. Abell, 77, of Mount Vernon died May 31, 2008. The son of Richard Morris and Jess Lu Abell, he was born September 6, 1930 in Houston, Texas.


He graduated from Jasper, AR high school, attended Arkansas Polytechnic College and Trinity University and was a 1963 graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School. During the Korean war he was on active duty with the U.S. Air Force as a weapons instructor, and as head of the weapons section of the Air Force Instructor School.


Mr. Abell began a career in finance with GMAC, later serving as Vice President of City National Bank, and Senior Loan Officer of Alaska State Bank, both in Anchorage, Alaska. Subsequently Mr. Abell retired in 1976 as Senior Vice President and Senior Loan Officer of Alaska National Bank of the North,


Mr. Abell married a fellow Alaskan Banker, Alice Evans, in 1970. After their retirement they moved to Friday Harbor, WA, later moving to Mount Vernon in 1985.


R.M. had many interests, including home design and construction, jewelry design, boating, animals, e-mailing friends, Seattle Seahawks, and keeping up with world affairs. He was a lifelong member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, as well as a member of other organizations.


Surviving are his wife, Alice; son, Richard Morris Abell; daughter, Lisa Suzanne Hess; grandchildren, Jasmine and Jordan Hess, all of Mount Vernon.


At Mr. Abell's request, no services will be held.


Arrangements are under the care of the Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, WA.
