Herman T. Jones was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on May 26, 1906 to John Redel and Gertrude Beatrice (Leatherwood) Jones. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Kansas (Lawrence, Kansas) in Zoology; Jones also did graduate in Education Administration from the University. From 1932-1939, he taught and was Registrar at Western University (Kansas City, Kansas). In 1939, he became principal of Topeka, Kansas' KS Vocational School. Eight years later, in 1947, Jones accepted a position in the Prairie View A&M University (Prairie View, Texas) Biology Department. He later became Principal of the Prairie View Training School, serving from 1951 until his retirement in 1971.

Jones was active in a number of activities: including Alpha Phi Alpha, the Improved Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks of the World, and the Ambassador Club, which he was President. He married Gwendolyn Mae Butler on January 12, 1934 in Kansas City, Kansas. The couple of four children: Ralph Martin, Janet Elaine, Gayle Carolyn, and Patricia Lee. Jones died on April 3, 1983 in Hempstead, Texas. Nine years later after his death, Waller Independent School District honored Jones' legacy of achievement by naming one of its institutions, The Herman T. Jones Intermediate School on the campus of Prairie View A&M University.
