Lawyer. He was a communist, staunch defender of National Liberation Front (FLN) activists during the Algerian independence war. He was nicknamed "the Devil's Advocate," because he defended the Nazi Klaus Barbie in 1987 (nicknamed the "Butcher of Lyon"), Cambodia's Khmer Rouge head of state Khieu Samphan, the Palestinian activist Waddi Haddad, and the Venezuelan terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, known as "Carlos the Jackal." He also sought to defend the former presidents Saddam Hussein of Iraq, who was executed for crimes against humanity, and Slobodan Milosevic of Serbia, who represented himself and died before the trial's verdict. With a certificate of recognition and an honorary medal received on behalf of the President of the Republic of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, by the Consul General of Algeria in Paris, he was honored for his noble deeds "to the national cause and commitment to fight for the country's liberation."
