In 1989, he retired from NASA. He was active in the Republican Party in Christian County. Mr. McConnell was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Quincy, Ill., and was a NARFE member. He was an active Toastmaster, winning many contests. He was a member of the Cassidy United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and served as a lay speaker. He had also taught Sunday School in Lancaster, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald C. and Florence McConnell, and an older brother, Wiley McConnell, all of Quincy, Ill. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; his son, Donald R. McConnell and wife Julia of Long Beach, Calif.; his daughter, Linnea Sue Garner and husband Randy, and grandsons Michael, Benjamin and Wiley, all of Pomona Park, Fla.; a stepson, Neal Stumbo of Ozark; a stepdaughter, Debra Linscome and husband Steven and stepgrandson, Christopher, of Kings Beach, Calif.; and a sister, Mary Mahoney and husband Pat of Quincy, Ill.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, in Adams Funeral Home, Ozark, with Rev. Harold Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Richwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to service time on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
