Joel passed away in a car accident. He and his wife, Bertha, along with their nephew and three children, were driving from Pasco to Sunnyside, Washington early Sunday morning after a Saturday night birthday party. When Joel, who was driving a 2001 GMC Yukon, failed to negotiate the right curve going from I-182 to I-82, the SUV went off the ramp and rolled about seven times before coming to a stop. Bertha and Joel were reportedly not wearing seatbelts. They were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Their nephew from Arizona, Cristian Valdez, was not wearing his seatbelt properly; he was partially ejected and he passed away at the scene as well. Reportedly, Joel may have been talking or texting on his cell phone when the accident occurred at about 2:20 AM, as an open cell phone was found at the scene. Apparently, the accident occurred hours before help arrived, after somebody spotted a 10-year-old boy crawling around on the road. State Patrol did not arrive until about 7 AM. Joel was 32-years-old.
