Fred Wharton Rankin Jr. passed away September 16, 2013 at the age of 89. He was born February 27, 1924 in Rochester, Minnesota, the eldest grandson of Mayo clinic co-founder Charles Mayo, and the son of prominent surgeon, Fred W. Rankin Sr. and his wife, Edith Mayo Rankin.
Fred attended Kent School in Connecticut and finished first in his class in 1942. He received an appointment to West Point, and his class finished an accelerated three-year program to join the war effort in 1945, at which time the war ended. He would later receive a Master's degree from Cal Tech.
As a young officer in Germany, Fred would meet the love of his life; Irmgard, and they enjoyed sixty years of marriage, raising four children. The family was stationed in many places such as Germany, Japan and numerous stops within the United States. He retired from the military after 21 years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Fred then enjoyed a 25-year career as a professor at the University of Houston in both the engineering and technology departments.
His parents, his wife Irmgard, and his brother, Thomas A. Rankin, preceded Fred in death. He is survived by his brother, Charles 'Bo' Rankin of Florida and his sister, Edith 'Missy' Redden of New Jersey. Children who survive him are: Karin Sisk and husband Allen, Dr. Susan Rankin and husband James Palmer, Fred Rankin III and wife Diane; and Douglas Rankin and wife, Melissa. Grandchildren Allison Bennett and Hillary Green also survive him, as well as great-grandchildren: Makenzie Green, Caroline Bennett and Jack Bennett.
A special appreciation would like to be extended to the caregivers who assisted him with kindness and tenderness in his final days.
A memorial service in his honor will be held at Unity Church in the small chapel, at 3pm on Saturday, September 21, 2013. Address: 2929 Unity Drive, Houston, Texas, 77057.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Red Cross, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the charity of one's choice .
Fred Rankin Jr. was a gentle, loyal, determined spirit, who loved to read, play the organ and dance. Those who knew Fred loved him. He will be missed.
