The third settler to Maple Valley Township was John H. Beckett. He came to Maple Valley in 1854 with his wife, Sarah J. Beckett. She was a native of Oxford County, Ontario. John Beckett purchased 120 acres of land and became a permanent and prominent citizen. The Becketts had four children: Stephen, Peter M., Edward William, and Mary L. who later became teacher in the township. Mr. Beckett had increased his farm to 640 acres with 120 acres in top cultivation, an orchard of 200 acres, with a great variety of fruit trees, a fine residence and farm buildings.
He was married a second time to Naomi L. McMahon of Worth township, the daughter of John and Barbara (Wilson) McMahon,, a sister of Hon Joel W. McMahon, a senator from Sanilac County. There were three children of this marriage, Charles W., Joel F., and Nora E. From the book: Sanilac County History by Hazel Arnold Trumble pg 85.
