He was born May 27, 1937 in Mooreland, a son of the late Kenneth Edgar "Shorty" and Frances Cathlene Gard.
Gene was a 1955 graduate of Mooreland High School. He was a former owner of Mitzi's Mini Market, Shawn's Rentals, Gene Gard and Son (a Meadow Gold Dairy distributorship), and also Gard's Auction Service. He was formerly a volunteer fireman for the Mooreland Fire Department. He was involved with the Mooreland Fair for many years as an event announcer. Gene was Past Master and was currently serving as Master of Losantville Lodge No. 674 F&AM. He was a member of the Mooreland North Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jacque; two daughters, Mitzi (husband: Martin) Rees of New Castle and Shawn Gard of Bossier, LA; a son, Greg Gard of New Castle; his grandchildren, Joshua Gard, Pvt. Lennon Gard, Lillius Gard, Ryan Gard, Kaci Rees and Levi Rees; his brothers, Gary (wife: Darlene) Gard, George Gard, Gerald "Buck" (wife: Betty) Gard; a sister, Carolyn (husband: Cecil) Cooper; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Mick Braun.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Mason Auzenne.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Pastor Denny Neal and Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Mooreland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 – 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m.
