The daughter of a Texas rancher, Hitchens attended Catholic schools and the University of Southern California, one time being a classmate of screen actor Van Heflin. She began selling short stories and poetry while in her teens and her novel "Fool's Gold," was made into a film entitled "Band of Outsiders."
