He was the son of John W. Shaffer and Grace E. Myrick.In 1900 John W 47, Gracie 32, Stella 8, Clarence 6, and Forrest 6. In 1910 the family had grown with the birth of 2 more daughters Mary S 7 and Frances 2, and Stella had been married 2 months and her husband was also living with the family. When he registered for the W W I Draft he was (single/ Divorced) living in Kansas. When he registered for the World War II Draft he was living in Missouri.

He married Emma J. Millard on November 26, 1919 in

Wayne County, Michigan. They divorced in 1936. Emma remarried in 1939. to Russell Pratt.
