Liaison Officer to 1 British Airborne Division
Aged 34.
When Germany surrendered in May 1945 RAF Air Vice Marshal Scarlett-Streatfeild CBE was given the honour of accepting their surrender in Norway. Accompanied by Norwegian liaison officer Major Petter Cato Juliebø, he took off on 10 May for Oslo from RAF Great Dunmow in Essex, England, aboard RAF 190 Squadron’s Short Stirling Mark IV LK297 aircraft. The Stirling, crewed by six airmen, was lost without trace during heavy rains and dense fog, and it wasn’t until 21 June 1945 that the crash site was located at Andtjernâsen in the hills near Sørkedalen valley, about 10 miles north of Oslo, where it had crashed into the hillside and exploded, killing all 24 individuals aboard (the crew, AVM Scarlett-Streatfeild, Major Juliebø and sixteen paratroopers who were accompanying Scarlett-Streatfeild).
