Jean Carolyn (Thomas) Lambert, of Akron, died at home, Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005 at age 80. She was born March 9 (her mother's birthday), 1924, the youngest child (by almost 10 years) of John Webster THOMAS and Bertha A. HINE, both of Tallmadge, Ohio. Jean's father, a chemist at Firestone Tire & Rubber, was hand-picked by Harvey S. Firestone to succeed him as president and CEO of the company.

Jean attended King School and graduated from Old Trail School and Connecticut College, where she excelled in her field of botany, and was honored for her lifetime of giving.
Jean married Donald Malcom Lambert in 1945 and they had three children, Bill, Tom, and Mrs Nancy (Patrick H.) Reymann.

Jean enjoyed golfing at Portage Country Club, tennis player, downhill skiing and gardening and instilled her love of sports and the outdoors in her children and grandchildren. She was also a member of the Akron Garden Club, the Junior League of Akron, and a retired member of the Akron City Hospital Women's Board.

After her divorce, Jean traveled the world, visiting England, Egypt, Copenhagen, and the Virgin Islands. She settled on the beautiful island of St. Croix, where she spent 15 years in her condo by the sea, where friends and family visited often. She also purchased one of the few remaining sugar mills, standing high on a hill on the island. She was a quiet philanthropist who started a foundation that supports her alma mater and a variety of conservation projects in the community. With the foundation's support, Jean restored the garden at Hale Farm & Village, named in honor of her mother, Bertha Hine Thomas. She later funded a greenhouse to support the growing of vintage plants for the garden.

Her friends were from all walks of life, she once hosted a gathering at her modest apartment in Columbus that included blue-collar neighbors and the publisher of the Columbus Dispatch, all equal in her eyes. She was smart, funny, and unfailingly kind and thoughtful.
