He died at the age of 31 of tuberculosis on August 20, 1899, in the Tewksbury Almshouse in Tewksbury, Massachusetts and was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Roslindale, Massachusetts.

Gravesite Details
There are two headstones. The small white headstone has the names of Jane (McDermott) Cunniff and James Cunniff and is leaning on the larger stone (Cunniff, Mansfield & Tabeling), which was installed much later.
