Joseph H Cunniff, born in 1868, was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was the third child of Irish immigrants, John and Jane (McDermott) Cunniff. His father was a marble worker. In 1871, his mother and his uncle, James Cunniff, died of consumption (tuberculosis) followed by the death of his infant sister of cholera. When his father remarried in 1872 the entire family relocated to South Boston.
Not much else is known of Joseph’s life but he appears to have been a troubled young man and had a number of run-ins with the local police during the 1890s.
He died at the age of 31 of tuberculosis on August 20, 1899, in the Tewksbury Almshouse in Tewksbury, Massachusetts and was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Roslindale, Massachusetts.

Gravesite Details
There are two headstones. The small white headstone has the names of Jane (McDermott) Cunniff and James Cunniff and is leaning on the larger stone (Cunniff, Mansfield & Tabeling), which was installed much later.
