Matthew Hobson, 36, formerly of Amarillo, died Sunday, July 19, 2009.


Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday in Victoria Congregational Church in Jamaica, N.Y., with the Rev. Mark Marsh officiating. Local Arrangements are by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Matthew was born Aug. 19, 1972, in Amarillo and attended Wolflin and Puckett elementary schools, Crockett Middle School and Amarillo High School, but graduated from William Penn High School in York, Pa. He was inspired by many of his teachers during the years, including Dr. Rick DeVoe and Betty Roller. He studied violin with Helen Dunn and Debra Fong. He played with York Symphony and substituted with the Baltimore Symphony during his senior year of high school. He attended Brandeis University and George Mason University, and graduated from La Guardia College with a degree in veterinary technology. He was employed by Rockefeller University in genetic research.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Hobson, in 1998; and a sister, Michelle Hobson, in 2001.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Sandy and Mort Sain; and a stepbrother, Danny Sain of Dodson, Texas.

The family suggests memorials be to Mission Trips, First Baptist Church, 1208 S. Tyler St., Amarillo, TX 79101-4296.
