Garnett Wilson Adams, Sr., 94, of Scottsville, died on Friday, September 6, 2013 at his home, faithfully being cared for by his daughter and son-in-law, Doris and John Toney, for 12 years.

He was born on August 12, 1919 in Louisa, a son of the late Frank Martin and Mattie Caroline (Stanley) Adams.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Lucille (Crews) Adams; three brothers and four sisters.

Mr. Adams loved God and was the oldest member of Mulberry Grove Baptist Church. He was a master craftsman and owned Adams and Son Construction, working closely with his son for 30 plus years. He was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed golf, talking about politics and having the Bible read to him every day.

He served in the United States Army with the Fourth Infantry Division, Headquarters Battery, 20th Field Artillery. He landed on Utah Beach on June 6, 1944, moving through Paris, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany and ending in Austria. This consisted of 199 straight days of combat.

He was a member of George Lodge #32 of Howardsville. He received his EA Degree on March 14, 1953, his FC Degree on April 11, 1953 and his MM Degree on April 25, 1953 and was appointed Worshipful Master of the George Lodge on January 1, 1958 and again on January 1, 1959. On November 1, 1986 he was made an Honorary Member of Taylor Lodge #117 and was appointed District Deputy of the 17th District on January 1, 1962. He received his 50 year Masonic pin on May 1, 2003 and his 60 year pin on January 1, 2013. Mr. Adams was the oldest member of the George Lodge.

Surviving family members include three children, Diane Adams Moss and her fiancée, Harold Haislip, of Howardsville, Doris Adams Toney and her husband, John, of Scottsville and Garnett Wilson Adams, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Howardsville; five grandchildren, Pamela A. Murrell and her fiancée, Bryan Phillips, of Arvonia, Christopher W. Moss and his wife, Rebecca of Appomattox, J.L. Toney and his wife, Allison, of Scottsville, Garnett W. Adams, III and his wife, Brianna, and Zane F. Adams, all of Howardsville; six great-grandchildren, Jason Hunter Wharam, Jr., Grace Lucille Moss, Autumn Hailey Toney, Mattie Caroline Moss, Lainey Faith Adams and Kylie Harper Adams.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2013 at Mulberry Grove Baptist Church by the Reverend Michael Khol. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
