HAND, WALTER NORRIS, 78 - of Mays Landing, died at his home on January 13, 2009. Born in Millville on August 5, 1930 to the late Norris and Anna Hand, he was pre-deceased by his brother Harold, and his sister Anna. He grew up in Laureldale and was a member of Pleasantville High School class of 1947. Upon completion of post-graduate work, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict. Serving aboard the USS Tanner AGS-15 and the USS Vulcan AR-5, he was honorably discharged in 1953. Prior to his enlistment, he established his first retail business, a paint store, in the Spring of 1949. By 1965, N.E. Hand & Son had become a full-service hardware store at 6016 Main Street. After serving the community for over 58 years, he retired in 2007, but continued to play an active role in local affairs. He was on the Atlantic County Board of Elections, the Hamilton Township MUA, where he served as chairman and treasurer for over 21 years, and the American Legion Post #254. The Masonic Brotherhood was his lifelong passion. Walter was raised in Unity Lodge #96 F and AM in March 1953, served as Worshipful Master in 1961 and was also a member of MB Taylor Lodge #141 in Hammonton. He was a member of Excelsior Consistory in Collingswood, served as Most Wise Master, Chapter of Rose Croix in 1984 and Commander in Chief of the Consistory in 1994. He had been a 33? Mason since 1985. He was also a member of Crescent Temple Shrine.

Walter is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline, and their children Carolyn, her husband Paul McGarvie; Walter, his wife Bernadette; Valerie, her husband John Morris; grandchildren Heather McGarvie-Corey, Holly and Laurel McGarvie; Katie Hand-Wilson, Christopher Hand; Ryan,
Kyle and Sean Morris and great-grandchildren Hunter, Dylan and Savanna Wilson.

Friends are invited to attend the viewing between 10 and 12 on Saturday, January 17 at Boakes Funeral Home in Mays Landing. Masonic Services will be held at 12 noon, followed by funeral services. Burial will be at Union Cemetery, Mays Landing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Shriners Hospitals for Children
