John was serving aboard the U.S.S. Walke (DD-723) during the Korean War when it either struck a floating mine, or was hit by a torpedo 60 miles off the Korean coast. The hull on the port side was severely damaged killing 26 and wounding 40. John was among those killed in action.

John was the 7th of 9 children born to Willard & Minnie Mariah Warden Walker:
Flora W. Humphreys (b. 1909), James (b. 1911), Russell (b. 1912), Delbert (b. 1915), Wanda W. DeHart (b. 1916) Wilda W. Mahoney (b. 1918), John (b. 1920), Willard Jr (1924), Larry (b. 1928)
