Seth Griffith Hyland (a.k.a. "Highland')was one of 13 children born to Henry & Elizabeth (Sharp) Hyland both of whom are also buried at Old Jerome Cemetery. Seth was married to Miss Jane Scott on December 4, 1854, in the Hardin County, OH, village of Kenton and the couple set up housekeeping in Paris Township, Union County, OH, until 1861 when they moved to the Union County village of Frankfort (now called Jerome) where both spent the remainder of their lives. Seth fathered 7 children with Jane and supported the family selling pottery, farming, and managing a small hotel. On February 26, 1864, Seth enlisted in the ill-fated 34th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) and was assigned to Company G. On July 6, 1864, Jane (Scott) Hyland died giving birth to Seth's 7th child and within three months both the newborn child and another of Seth & Jane's children had also died. On January 11, 1865, Seth was captured along with most of his regiment at Beverly, West Virginia, in a little-known Civil War skirmish known as "Rosser's Raid." Seth spent about one month at the notorious POW camp in Richmond, Virginia, known as Libby Prison. Seth was "paroled" during a POW exchange and, on March 17, 1865, came home to Jerome to marry Susan (Cork) McCawley who was herself also recently widowed. Following "Rosser's Raid," so few troops remained in the 34th O.V.I. that the remnants of the 34th were consolidated with the remnants of the 36th O.V.I. Following his marriage to Susan, Seth returned to the 36th O.V.I. which was then in the field near Winchester, VA. The regiment was then moved to Wheeling, WV, where Seth was mustered out with his company on July 27, 1865. After the war Seth and Susan parented 7 children - bringing Seth's paternity total to 14. Later in life, Seth once responded to a Civil War pension-form questionnaire that he was the proud grandparent of 56 grandchildren!
