Frank was born in Staunton, Virginia, he went to school for six winters before starting to work at age 14. He worked various jobs for pay of $2 per month to $1.25 per week plus board. In 1920 he began working for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio before joining the Army. He was a Private First Class Mechanic and was honorably discharged on July 14, 1921. He continued working until June 24, 1922 when he rode his bicycle from Huntington, West Virginia, spending the first night in Rush, Kentucky, then rode on to Salt Lick, Kentucky. The next day he put the bicycle on the train and rode the train to Winchester, Kentucky, where he put the bicycle in storage and continued by train working along the way through Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and finally arriving in Glendale, California. He worked for Goodyear in Los Angeles until June 1923. He returned to Huntington, West Virginia where he worked as an apprentice carpenter. On October 25, 1925 he met his future wife, Thelma Linkous at Westmoreland Baptist Church. They married on June 20, 1926. For the honeymoon they drove their Overland Roadster visiting relatives in West Virginia and Virginia. They had three daughters, Betty, Mildred and Carolyn and one son Arvin Franklin, also known as Frank. He rebuilt his sister Mae's house when her house burned on Christmas eve in 1929. He took his mother-in-law in after she suffered a stroke. Frank was contractor general for the construction of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetary. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
