Anna Maude Barr was born on September 20, 1881, in Marcus, Iowa, the daughter of Gabriel M. and Margaret Rebecca Ward Barr. She was the 3rd child of 6 and was raised a Methodist.
Other Siblings:
Pearl Wanda (Pearlie), b. June 4, 1886, in Marcus.
She died in childhood in Marcus of scarlet fever.
Leslie Garfield, b. Sept. 3, 188_, in Marcus.
He died in childhood in Marcus of spinal meningitis.
Both are presumably buried in Marcus, but there are no grave markers, and the cemetery has no record of their burials.
Anna Maude graduated from the Iowa Normal School (later Iowa State Teacher's College, now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls. She was a pioneer school teacher in Dallas, South Dakota, 1911-1920; later in Rockwell City, Iowa. She taught primary grades, including speech and drama.
She met Joseph Arthur Pope in Rockwell City. They were married on June 3, 1922, in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.
Mamie was an expert seamstress. She made her daughter's clothing while Jo Ann was growing up, and was her "wardrobe mistress" when Jo Ann danced professionally in California. She was the bookkeeper for her daughter at Jo Ann's School of Dance. Mamie enjoyed crossword puzzles and, for many years, kept pet parakeets.
Mamie traveled throughout the United States until she was 80 years old, visiting and staying with relatives and friends. Throughout her long life, she traveled by covered wagon, train, automobile, and plane.
In her later years, Mamie would entertain the nurses at the Iowa Veterans Home Infirmary in Marshalltown, Iowa. From her years of teaching, she could still recite the classics and poetry from memory.
Anna Maude "Mamie" Pope passed away on November 28, 1978, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, at age 97. Funeral services were December 2, at the Iowa Veterans Home Memorial Chapel.
