Virginia Beach - Walter S. "Dooley" Brady, age 89 of Virginia Beach, Virginia went to be with the Lord and was greeted by his family and friends on July 30, 2013. Mr. Brady is survived by his son Robert W. Brady, two grandsons' Robert W. Brady and his wife Alicia and Carl F. Brady, one granddaughter, Maria C. Brady, great-grandson Jaxson A. Brady and brother and sister-in-laws; Marjorie Brady of Northport, Alabama and Beverly J. Brady of Havelock, North Carolina, Frank and Beverly Johnson of Virginia Beach, Bill and Linda Johnson of Macungie, Pennsylvania, Hank and Ann Bekier of Virginia Beach, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Born in Ensley, Alabama, March 6, 1924 "Dooley" as he was known as was the second youngest of eight children. He started his wonderful lifelong love of beer at the age of six when the doctor prescribed a bottle a day to help him gain weight. At which time as he grew older got him into brewing beer in the school attic. At the age of 17 and weighing 98 pounds Walter joined the United States Navy in 1941 to see the world and get three meals a day.
His first duty station was abroad the USS Jouett DD396. Where as a young man from Holt, Alabama, he visited China, Guam, Hawaii and Brazil. With Brazil being his favorite duty station he always had a different story to tell. You could always hear him say "OH RIO" and a big smile would appear. The USS Jouett patrolled the east coast and sunk the German submarines before America joined WWII. He was there during D-Day and saw the horror of the war. During his Navy career he met the love of his life Catherine Grant who was also in the Navy while stationed in New York. They were happily married for 59 years and enjoyed life together along with family and friends. Walter always had compliments for the ladies and loved dancing. His home was always open to friends and family to visit or stay as long as they wanted to.
Walter retired from the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Postal Service and the Virginia Beach School Board; however he was a jack of all trades and the first to help put up a fence or drive a well. As a member of many organizations he loved the Elks Lodge the most. He would spend many days racking the pool balls and having a cold one.
Walter passed peacefully in his sleep at home with friends and family by his side and his niece Helen Martin making the last three years good ones. She was truly Heaven sent. So to all family and friends the final words from Walt, "TAKE IT EASY PARTNER AND LET ME HOLD YOUR WALLET!"
Visitation will be Aug. 5, 6-8 p.m. and funeral services will be Aug. 6, 12 p.m. All services will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens. 6329 E.
